About Black Coffee Born Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo on March 11, 1976, in Durban, South Africa, and raised in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, Black Coffee grew up surrounded by music, inspired by his father's jazz records and his uncle's reggae collection, before discovering house music and beginning his career as a DJ and producer in the mid-1990s. His participation in the 2003 Red Bull Music Academy proved a turning point, launching him onto the South African DJ circuit and setting him on a path toward global recognition. His debut album Black Coffee (2005) introduced his deeply soulful sound, and his South African Music Award-winning Home Brewed (2009) established him as one of the country's foremost musical voices. Over the following decade he built a global reputation through a series of acclaimed albums including Africa Is Not A Country (2011), We Dance Again (2012), Music Is King (2017), and his critically acclaimed sixth studio album Subconsciously (2021), which featured Pharrell Williams, David Guetta, Diplo, Usher, Sabrina Claudio, Celeste, and RY X, and won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in 2022, a historic milestone for African artists in electronic music. He has since held coveted residencies at Hï Ibiza, headlined the world's greatest festivals including Coachella, Tomorrowland, and Ultra, and in July and August 2025 became the first ever DJ to headline an event at The Old Royal Naval College, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in London. His recent collaborations include Trippy Yeah with Jimi Jules and a reunion with Shimza under their The Rhythm banner, while his Soulstic Music label continues to champion African electronic talent worldwide.
